Rosanna Dean Fleet Gallery

Fleeting glimpse

Rosanna Dean visits Fleet Gallery, St Leonards. There is a Roland Jarvis retrospective on. The gallery is very bright and colourful with his work up. The floors are furnished in rugs (the other thing you can buy here). It’s a lovely, soft furnished experience and very comfortable for viewing art. The gallery owner is very chatty and friendly.

Roland Jarvis, who died last year at his studio, studied at Chelsea School of Art and was taught by was Henry Moore and Ceri Richards. The breadth of his work covers painting, sculpture (there are some Miro-like creations dotted about, made out of bits of old typewriters and other vintage office machinery), and film.

When people asked him how his work was going, he used to say “I’m not working, I’m playing!”
