Brighton Speed Trials

Brighton Speed Trials were first held in 1905. It is the oldest race on the calendar. Earlier races around Bexhill, further East on the Sussex coast no longer run.

Madeira Drive was actually asphalted in the first instance for this very purpose. This was the work of Sir Harry Preston, a dynamic pugilist, sailor and hotelier, convincing Brighton Council to do it.
