Glasgow, 1980

Currently shooting in Glasgow. These images by Raymond Depardon, from Magnum, have been a great insight into that time.

The tower blocks are all gone now, including Norfolk Court*, that was blown up last time I was in Glasgow, last year. The shipbuilding industry, from being the world’s industrial centre, is decimated. There is still shipbuilding, but nowhere near the scale of the time. Part of Glasgow’s fabric is gone forever.

The photos are bleak, but at times humorous. I don’t know what the brief was, but clearly it’s not to capture a wide social diaspora.

They show social hardship, street drunkeness and hard life.

* Pretty sure I can’t include a Magnum photo for copyright reasons, but there is a picture of Norfolk Court in this set. The picture with a green and yellow bus, and a man leaning on hoardings. The nearest tower block is part of Norfolk Court, demolished May 2016. I think the further tower, on the left is the one I saw being blown up.
